Comment: I go there several years now and I am always happy with my experience. My doctor, Dr. Stein, is very knowledgeable and on top of things. She gave me the best therapy for my psoriasis that I have gotten for the last 40 years. She is very responsive for my after visit question and when I was worried about the skin cancer she discovered, she gave me the support I needed. She sent me to Dr. Pyles who remove the cancer. Dr. Pyles was very professional and did a wonderful job with nice clean stitches. I highly recommend this place.

Comment: I saw a dermatologist at the practice named Dr Malcolm Pyles. He was knowledgeable, professional, and was able to ask the right questions to help me with my issue. I also had another non-emergency skin question and he was able to diagnose it right away. Dr. Pyles has excellent bedside manner and is able to help patients with dark skin. It is very difficult to find an African-American dermatologist in San Francisco and I will be sure to recommend him to others. The front desk staff is welcoming, there was no wait, and the office operates very efficiently.

It took 3 weeks to get him to tell me my biopsy results after multiple calls even though the results were received 1 week after the procedure.The front office also kept my credit card information on file from a tap to pay transaction without my knowledge/consent and charged my card for a remaining balance without notifying me or sending me a bill first. I had to call and ask what the charge was for & request an itemized bill.Be wary!

Had to dispute with credit card to get money back (for the second time).Update #2: They just called again trying to recharge the same amount of $101.13. I assumed they only called this time, because the credit card rejected the charge.Update #3: Finally sent a real bill in the mail. Turns out the charge was for a small procedure they said would be free. We paid the cost just to close everything out, which we would have done months ago. Billing department doesnt seem to know what they are doing.

If I had no help in completing the form I would have arrived at the clinic late and would have been fined. However the clinic would not be penalized for making me wait. The doctor was almost 15 minutes late to the appointment. There is no regard for the patients schedule.The walls are flimsy and I could hear the conversation between the doctor and patient in the next room clearly. Pretty sure this is a HIPAA violation.

She was terribly impatient with any questions I had — questions I had since no information on different presentations or causes was discussed or any drug side effects. Spent at most 3-5 minutes. Billed for $240. Reception was also inattentive and forgot about my presence - ended up waiting 20+ minutes.

Comment: The Berman Skin Institute San Francisco Office is getting one star because Yelp doesnt allow 0 stars. The Berman Skin Institute has given me the worst possible experience Ive ever had. On my first visit, I came in for a general check-up, and the entire time the doctor just tried to sell me on botox and laser hair removal and then forced me into scheduling my next check-up in the new year. A few months later I went back to Berman Skin Institute for an alternate health reason, but went to a new doctor, hoping they would be better. This new doctor was equally awful. She didnt give me any helpful information, didnt listen to the explanations/information I gave, and made me repeat the problem I was having multiple times. Eventually, I was told there was nothing they could do to help me at that time, and was sent home. I returned after my issue got worse and, eventually, they agreed to do a skin biopsy. I was told the results of my biopsy would come in 10-14 days however, after 14 days, I had heard nothing of my results. After 14 days I began calling them to see if I could get any updates, but all I got was that they would look into it, and never got a callback. On my 4th call, I was finally able to get my results, in which no helpful information was disclosed. However, I was told that since the issue had gone away (in the two months it took for this process to come to a close) everything was fine. To close this out, I have received a bill from the pathology lab they sent the biopsy to, which is normal, however, they sent it under the wrong insurance, insurance I havent had in half a year. I called Berman Skin Institute to correct this, and their billing department told me that they dont know how this mistake happened because they had noted my change in insurance and it must have been something I did for them to charge the wrong one. To correct their error, I had to call the lab to get my insurance sorted out. Please, no one go here. This is a horribly run office with doctors that are just looking to make money and dont care about their patients.

I previously worked with a great dermatologist but he left so I planned to see a different dermatologist in the same office but he also left shortly thereafter. When I went in for my appointment, they sent a physicians assistant in who told me I should get Botox injections every 4-6 weeks (this was after the actual doctor I had been seeing suggested 3-4 months). When I called and complained and asked if the next time I came I could see a doctor, the person on the other end told me they had no more actual doctors in the San Francisco office and then forwarded me to a weird voicemail without telling me they were ending the call.

Comment: I wish I had read the other 1-star reviews.Before scheduling a consultation with one of their doctors, I was told that my insurance would cover the costs. Four months later, I start receiving calls from their billing department informing me of an $88 outstanding balance derived from a 15 minute conversation with one of their doctors.Indeed, they charged my insurance ~$150 for this 15 minute conversation, and while my insurance paid for $62 -- which is likely what they consider a reasonable charge for this service -- Im on the hook for the remaining cost.Reading the other 1-star reviews, it appears as if this may be common practice for Berman Skin Institute. Please be aware of our mistakes, so you are not blindsided with unanticipated charges.

Comment: I give Dr.Frederick Bartholomew and his medical assistant, Zoe Pearlman, of Berman Skin Care the highest praise! I am a thoughtful and careful medical consumer. I was incredibly pleased with both my initial consultation with Dr. Bartholomew about somepre-cancerous spots I have on my face and with the subsequent PDT (Photo Dynamic Treatment), which is blue light treatment for these pre-cancerous spots, Actinic Keratosis. Many things impressed me about my visits to Berman Skin Care, especially how thoughtful and patient both Dr. Bartholomew and Zoe Pearlman were with all my question and how knowledgeable and caring they were. I was given detailed info about what to expect during the treatment and clear, written info about what to do after the light treatment. During the treatment, Zoe Pearlman was magically skillful in helping to alleviate my anxiety. Also, it was easy to both make appointments and to contact people with questions. I feel confident that I will get excellent medical care as I work with Dr. Bartholomew and Zoe Pearlman on the needed follow up to my pre-cancerous facial spots. If you are in need of medical dermatology, I cannot recommend Dr. Bartholomew more highly. And, I almost never write reviews, let alone rave ones!

Comment: I thought it is a clinic with doctors. While I couldnt get an appointment at the clinic I visited usually, I got an appointment about removing a mole on top of my lip. They talked to me to pay cash instead of charging the insurance company. I went back in the afternoon for the procedure. It turned out to ask for $300 more than we discussed in the morning. I feel they just want to get money like robbery.

Comment: I typically don’t go out of my way to write reviews, but my experience at Berman Skin Institute’s San Francisco location has been absolutely phenomenal. I’ve been to this location three times all for different situations, and the staff and medical team have all been extremely kind, empathetic, and understanding. Walking in to their nice, new, clean facility I thought “oh goodness I’m going to be paying for this.” I clearly can’t speak for all insurance situations but with my insurance the bill ended up being cheaper than any other dermatologist I’ve ever visited with the same insurance. Beyond this, it is extremely easy to get an appointment online, and they don’t schedule so far in advance like other providers. I have seen Dr. Bartholomew and Dr. McMullen, and they both have come across as knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely kind. I will definitely be back if I need any future services.

Comment: Finding this practice was one of the happy accidents of my life. I have psoriasis and started coming here in early 2020 for phototherapy treatments, which immediately worked. The practice stayed open through the worst of the COVID-19 shutdown, providing the same high level of care even with reduced hours. Everyone here, from the manager (excellent) to the doctors (terrific) to the medical assistants and front office staff (wonderful), treats patients with the warmth and skill we all deserve.

Comment: Ebu at Berman Skin Institute caught stage 0 melanoma on my fair skin on my very first visit. Weve done a few biopsies over the years and Im in the office so regularly for skin checks that the staff feel like dear friends. My scars from the biopsies heal beautifully - I wont let anyone else do them, even when I go to the UCSF Melanoma Clinic. Ive also had IPL on my face for sun spots and Ive stopped wearing foundation completely. This practice is really the ideal balance of medicine and beauty.

I highly recommend Dr. Deede Liu. She was incredibly informative and understanding throughout the process and was just all around a bright person to talk to. She was ready to listen to all of my skin concerns regardless of why I initially came in.. and I am so glad I chose to schedule my appointment with her.I would especially recommend Dr. Liu for young women. She clearly has a strong understanding of women and how our basic life stages and general health needs affect our skin. I felt that I could talk to her about things beyond dermatology and she was capable of offering professional advice and referrals. I came out of my appointment feeling like I learned something, and got the treatment I needed.Also the reception staff is 10/10. Super friendly and warm!

He made me regain confidence in western medicine... & that was definitely not easy & took a long time.I came in very frustrated with my continuous skin issues that I’ve never seen before, and it amazed me how fast & accurate he identified the issue and prescribed me with the fair-priced treatment that solved the issues in 3 days! It’s miraculous! His bedside manner was also impeccable... I was so used to condescending doctors that don’t want to give an extra minute to the disease-ridden plebs like us but Dr. McMullen treated me like a friend and shared medical diagnosis and explained in details with me. How wonderful! Surprisingly I know a mere thing or two in the medical realm so I truly appreciate the doc to take the time to help me understand the symptoms and the treatment strategy. Comment: I recently moved to San Francisco and needed to have a yearly skin check with a dermatologist but did not know of any. I located Berman skin institute on Zocdoc. Dr. McMullen had received good reviews and also had an excellent resume, attending some of the best schools in the country. I made an appointment and had a wonderful experience. Dr. McMullen is extremely nice and provides useful information. It turned out that I had an unusual looking mole on my left foot and he felt we should take it off and have it looked at. It was a fairly simple procedure and done quickly and efficiently and I look forward to continuing my relationship with Dr. Mc Mullen and the Berman skin Institute.

Comment: This clinic acts more like a store for expensive laser procedures than a doctors office.Coming in for a specific skin concern? Dont worry, youll get a hard pitch on a $1000+ laser operation before any treatment. Very uncomfortable to have to have your doctor trying to sell you on enhancements so blatantly.They will nickel and dime you as much as possible and blame it on insurance, like there arent alternative ways to code procedures for insurance.

Comment: This place is a joke. Do NOT go here and spare yourself a ton of agony afterwards. I went for a regular dermatologist checkup which could be described as completely mediocre at best. Then, a few weeks later the billing department emailed me and claimed I still owed a copay and that they would report it to my credit if I didnt pay it. I followed up with 3 separate emails and 5 phone calls. No one responded to my multiple outreaches and they didnt clarify how much I owed and how I could resolve it. It is now over 1 month later and after a ton of attempts, I still have not heard back from anyone and have no clue how to get in touch with their billing department (voicemail full). Even if you are a responsible patient and are proactive, their billing department (Shelly Harmon) is so unresponsive and so unprofessional that you will go through months of agony and work. This still isnt resolved for me, but avoid making the same mistake I did and stay away from this place.
